Ep. 267 (Coffee Time) Texas vs. The FDA-- New Law Forces Warning Labels on Food Additives

It might seem like a long way from a government building in Austin, Texas to a field of native prairie, but they’re more connected than you think. What we choose to allow in our food has a direct link to the choices made on the farm. Better farming practices lead to healthier ecosystems, and it all starts with the soil.

This week, we’re talking about a new Texas law, SB 25, that forces a national conversation on food additives. We dig into why a law about grocery store labels matters for the future of American agriculture, land stewardship, and creating healthy habitats for all of us.

  • Nick, if you had,

    00;01;14;08 - 00;01;17;29

    give up your whole life

except for your wife right now

    00;01;18;24 - 00;01;23;00

and go and live in another place

    and the entire planet

    00;01;24;04 - 00;01;24;22

    live there.

    00;01;24;22 - 00;01;26;29

I mean, like you're going to have to find

    a job or.

    00;01;26;29 - 00;01;30;00

    Yeah, in your case,

    start a Krusty Krab to.

    00;01;33;25 - 00;01;34;04

    Where.

    00;01;34;04 - 00;01;37;04

    Would it be?

    00;01;37;04 - 00;01;39;12

And I can't know anyone there.

    00;01;39;12 - 00;01;40;27

No. You can know somebody there.

    00;01;40;27 - 00;01;42;04

    Oh, okay. Well,

    00;01;43;03 - 00;01;45;16

    I've got family in Michigan,

    00;01;45;16 - 00;01;47;05

a bunch of family in Michigan.

    00;01;47;05 - 00;01;49;15

    I'd love to be there.

Like you just settled right there.

    00;01;49;15 - 00;01;52;15

    Nothing against you, Michigan, but,

I mean, it's not that far away.

    00;01;53;08 - 00;01;54;26

    Redding, California.

    00;01;54;26 - 00;01;56;22

    I think that's where I came from.

    00;01;56;22 - 00;01;59;12

    And I love that place.

    00;01;59;12 - 00;02;02;05

But if I was picking a state

where, no one else, it could.

    00;02;02;05 - 00;02;03;02

    Be another country.

    00;02;03;02 - 00;02;04;19

    I think I'd pick Tennessee, I.

    00;02;04;19 - 00;02;06;05

Okay, another country would be cool.

    00;02;06;05 - 00;02;09;20

But, like, the amount of emotional effort

just to learn a new language

    00;02;09;26 - 00;02;12;06

    while also having. To, like,

    find a job and. Stuff.

    00;02;12;06 - 00;02;13;27

    I think I picked Tennessee.

    00;02;13;27 - 00;02;17;01

Tennessee is a good choice, and that would

have been high on my list as well, but I

    00;02;17;20 - 00;02;18;23

and I could have this wrong.

    00;02;18;23 - 00;02;19;23

    So fact check me.

    00;02;19;23 - 00;02;22;12

Always important fact check us by the way.

    00;02;22;12 - 00;02;26;10

    True,

I, I had heard from somebody credible that

    00;02;27;12 - 00;02;29;03

    Tennessee just got rid

    00;02;29;03 - 00;02;32;03

    of their open field doctrine,

    00;02;32;27 - 00;02;35;25

    which is what allows conservation

    00;02;35;25 - 00;02;39;01

officers to like, if they sense

    00;02;39;01 - 00;02;44;10

    that there's poaching going on

or something or some some heinous crime

    00;02;44;10 - 00;02;50;07

against, nature, they can without without

    like getting your permission,

    00;02;50;07 - 00;02;53;10

they can go on to private property

    and make sure that,

    00;02;54;12 - 00;02;56;04

laws are being obeyed, which is important.

    00;02;56;04 - 00;02;57;06

    It's an important law, right.

    00;02;57;06 - 00;02;57;24

    Because otherwise

    00;02;57;24 - 00;03;00;26

the only place that would ever be enforced

    to be on public land

    00;03;01;00 - 00;03;04;14

    and, and the vast majority,

especially in a state like Iowa,

    00;03;04;15 - 00;03;07;19

here, the vast majority of wildlife exists

    on private land.

    00;03;08;15 - 00;03;12;05

Just because most of our state is owned

    is is own private land.

    00;03;12;15 - 00;03;16;09

But, in Tennessee, they probably have

more public, quite a bit more public land.

    00;03;16;09 - 00;03;17;28

Oh yeah. Because they've got the Smoky

    Mountains.

    00;03;17;28 - 00;03;19;00

    Right, right.

    00;03;19;00 - 00;03;21;12

    But, but the eastern. Mountains.

    00;03;23;18 - 00;03;24;08

    But anyways, I thought.

    00;03;24;08 - 00;03;27;08

    That was an interesting thing,

    you know, that could really,

    00;03;27;17 - 00;03;30;17

become a problem for the quality of their,

    00;03;31;12 - 00;03;34;03

    wildlife, especially if,

    00;03;34;03 - 00;03;37;03

    it becomes that hard for,

    00;03;37;23 - 00;03;41;10

    law enforcement officers to, Yeah,

    make sure people are,

    00;03;41;21 - 00;03;45;05

you know, it kind of undermines

the Lacey act is really what it does.

    00;03;45;24 - 00;03;46;20

    Oh, yeah.

    00;03;46;20 - 00;03;47;24

    Yeah. Yeah, too.

    00;03;47;24 - 00;03;50;13

Well, not I, I shouldn't say it that way.

    00;03;50;13 - 00;03;54;13

Not the Lacey act specifically, but,

like, in the spirit of the right,

    00;03;54;13 - 00;03;58;05

    this idea of where we're,

    we're legally managing

    00;03;58;13 - 00;04;01;15

    for population health,

    00;04;01;27 - 00;04;03;14

    these species, you know.

    00;04;03;14 - 00;04;06;14

    Yeah, I, I,

    00;04;06;18 - 00;04;08;09

    don't like that.

    00;04;08;09 - 00;04;12;09

And it's not a big enough reason

for me to not move to fix.

    00;04;12;09 - 00;04;14;05

    Not worried about the deer

    hunting. Though.

    00;04;14;05 - 00;04;16;05

    Yeah, I really, I mean, I yeah.

    00;04;16;05 - 00;04;16;13

    What about.

    00;04;16;13 - 00;04;16;28

    I don't know.

    00;04;16;28 - 00;04;17;19

    This about Tennessee,

    00;04;17;19 - 00;04;20;10

but it is a trophy whitetail state,

    which is kind of rare

    00;04;20;10 - 00;04;22;18

    because you really don't

see that much in the South.

    00;04;22;18 - 00;04;24;03

    But they are a great.

    00;04;24;03 - 00;04;28;23

Well, but they're pretty I mean, I guess

    they're I guess they're south.

    00;04;28;23 - 00;04;33;17

    I don't I don't because I've spent a lot

of time in Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.

    00;04;34;12 - 00;04;37;12

    I see Missouri

    as more southern than Tennessee.

    00;04;38;00 - 00;04;38;13

    And they will.

    00;04;38;13 - 00;04;42;01

    Also because Tennessee's so desirable

to go to that so much.

    00;04;42;10 - 00;04;44;04

You spent right there. Do you know what?

    00;04;44;04 - 00;04;48;05

You just like this all the South

there's so desirable to go there. Sir.

    00;04;48;29 - 00;04;50;28

Well those South great places. Yeah.

    00;04;50;28 - 00;04;54;13

    Oh yeah. But,

I did have a friend. Oh, man.

    00;04;54;13 - 00;04;56;01

    I, I'll just.

    00;04;56;01 - 00;04;56;29

    I'll just tell a story.

    00;04;56;29 - 00;04;59;25

I had a friend who, lives in Alabama.

    00;04;59;25 - 00;05;02;21

He knew someone who shot her first name.

    00;05;02;21 - 00;05;03;22

    Start with the letter C.

    00;05;03;22 - 00;05;04;06

    Yeah, yeah.

    00;05;04;06 - 00;05;08;02

    So the friend is Caleb,

but Caleb knows someone who shot

    00;05;08;15 - 00;05;12;09

a ginormous buck, and I'm like,

    oh my goodness, dude.

    00;05;12;09 - 00;05;15;09

Like, tell me about it. Send me a photo.

    00;05;15;11 - 00;05;16;13

    There was a 128.

    00;05;18;14 - 00;05;20;25

And I just had to be like, oh man, dude,

    that's so cool.

    00;05;20;25 - 00;05;21;18

    Like, that's always.

    00;05;21;18 - 00;05;24;18

It'd be like, you can flick your toes.

    00;05;24;26 - 00;05;25;28

    That's not true. Why?

    00;05;25;28 - 00;05;28;28

    To watch three of those

on my way to work this morning,

    00;05;29;28 - 00;05;31;19

    though, right? Oh, man.

    00;05;31;19 - 00;05;34;24

    I, I've never shot a 128

    or anything bigger,

    00;05;34;24 - 00;05;37;02

so I don't want to take away,

    but it was like.

    00;05;37;02 - 00;05;39;25

    I mean, like,

it was a big deal to their town.

    00;05;39;25 - 00;05;44;14

It was, you know, at 128 in some places

in our country would be very impressive.

    00;05;44;14 - 00;05;44;25

    Yeah.

    00;05;44;25 - 00;05;48;04

Just because of how limited opportunities

    are. But.

    00;05;48;18 - 00;05;50;21

    Well,

    00;05;50;21 - 00;05;54;12

    welcome back to the Prairie

    Farm podcast, coffee time Wednesday.

    00;05;54;16 - 00;05;55;08

    I'm your favorite host.

    00;05;55;08 - 00;05;59;23

Nicholas Leary with your favorite co-host

    and grandfather can be.

    00;06;00;14 - 00;06;04;13

Up. At favorite co-host to the co-host

    and also our grandfather

    00;06;04;13 - 00;06;07;14

in spirit and the man always telling

    us to follow our budgets.

    00;06;09;26 - 00;06;10;11

    That's.

    00;06;10;11 - 00;06;12;08

Yeah, he's wearing one of those

    t shirts. Right.

    00;06;12;08 - 00;06;14;16

    You can't see it,

but it says follow your dreams.

    00;06;14;16 - 00;06;17;03

    It's out.

    00;06;17;03 - 00;06;18;13

    There. Now.

    00;06;18;13 - 00;06;19;25

    Follow your budget.

    00;06;19;25 - 00;06;21;19

    Get a real t shirt on, don't I?

    00;06;21;19 - 00;06;24;19

    That I'm sure.

    00;06;26;19 - 00;06;27;18

    Oh, man.

    00;06;27;18 - 00;06;28;16

    You know what that's like?

    00;06;28;16 - 00;06;32;06

That's sort of like the 2005 era t shirts

    where like that, right?

    00;06;32;06 - 00;06;33;05

    Little phrases.

    00;06;33;05 - 00;06;34;27

    That's

what I thought of in a recent episode

    00;06;34;27 - 00;06;37;24

    where you're talking about throwaway

clothes, like t shirts and stuff that.

    00;06;37;24 - 00;06;38;19

    Yeah, yeah, that.

    00;06;38;19 - 00;06;41;03

    All they make, like,

weird phrases out it or whatever.

    00;06;41;03 - 00;06;43;10

Like, I woke up for this or.

    00;06;43;10 - 00;06;45;10

    Yeah, the little like, cat.

    00;06;45;10 - 00;06;48;10

I'm over those sarcastic t shirts though.

    00;06;48;18 - 00;06;50;19

    Like,

    00;06;50;19 - 00;06;53;19

    I all I do is,

    00;06;53;19 - 00;06;55;12

yell at people and work hard.

    00;06;55;12 - 00;06;56;19

    And I've already worked hard.

    00;06;58;25 - 00;06;59;25

    Now, like, you're not going

    00;06;59;25 - 00;07;02;27

    to get any human connection.

    00;07;02;29 - 00;07;04;26

    So so last night. So.

    00;07;04;26 - 00;07;06;29

    Okay, first of all,

I won't lie to you guys.

    00;07;06;29 - 00;07;10;14

    We are recording this podcast

a day and a half later than we should be

    00;07;10;20 - 00;07;12;09

    recording,

and we're going to get it up in time.

    00;07;12;09 - 00;07;14;00

    We're we're behind.

    00;07;14;00 - 00;07;17;20

    Kent has literally wrestled

equipment to the ground all day.

    00;07;17;22 - 00;07;20;20

    Anything you could imagine

    breaking down has broken down.

    00;07;20;20 - 00;07;20;27

    Yeah.

    00;07;20;27 - 00;07;24;11

So we're going to skip straight

to our topic and next week

    00;07;24;15 - 00;07;25;22

    we'll get to a question.

    00;07;25;22 - 00;07;28;00

    We appreciate everyone

    who is sending the questions.

    00;07;28;00 - 00;07;29;00

    Please keep them coming.

    00;07;29;00 - 00;07;31;22

    Social at the Prairie farm.com.

    00;07;31;22 - 00;07;35;18

You know what questions we haven't

really gotten is stuff about whitetail.

    00;07;36;13 - 00;07;38;12

Well a little bit about pheasant

    but we really haven't.

    00;07;38;12 - 00;07;39;15

And I've been shocked about that.

    00;07;39;15 - 00;07;40;05

    But I think it's

    00;07;40;05 - 00;07;43;08

because anyone who has a question

about whitetail goes straight to skips.

    00;07;43;08 - 00;07;45;08

    Lie on. Your forum.

    00;07;45;08 - 00;07;47;20

    And we don't. Blame

and I don't blame you. Yeah, you know.

    00;07;47;20 - 00;07;48;27

    What's up.

    00;07;48;27 - 00;07;50;19

    But so last night

    00;07;50;19 - 00;07;54;12

I ate taquitos for the first time

since I was in, like, fifth grade.

    00;07;54;12 - 00;07;55;13

You guys know what those are?

    00;07;55;13 - 00;07;56;11

    Yeah. Wait, wait, wait.

    00;07;56;11 - 00;07;59;28

    Taquitos are our Takis taquitos?

    00;08;00;09 - 00;08;01;25

    Because Takis are the chips.

    00;08;01;25 - 00;08;04;16

    Yeah, Takis are like, the,

    like, Cheeto. Kind of.

    00;08;04;16 - 00;08;07;17

Okay, so taquitos are like the deep

    fried little cigar, like.

    00;08;07;20 - 00;08;09;00

    Yep, yep. Yeah.

    00;08;09;00 - 00;08;11;01

So what happened was my wife was.

    00;08;11;01 - 00;08;13;22

    She smoked those like, well.

    00;08;13;22 - 00;08;16;07

I, I ate like six of them.

    I'll tell you what.

    00;08;16;07 - 00;08;18;24

You're not supposed to eat them

    because. Oh, my.

    00;08;18;24 - 00;08;21;01

I felt terrible after work. Yeah.

    00;08;21;01 - 00;08;24;10

So I'm not here to tell you

if you should or shouldn't buy them.

    00;08;24;10 - 00;08;25;22

I'll just tell you my experience.

    00;08;25;22 - 00;08;27;17

    Monday night, my wife's going

    grocery shopping

    00;08;27;17 - 00;08;30;21

because, like, I got to kiddos,

she's like, I haven't had them in forever.

    00;08;30;21 - 00;08;31;27

    And she got, like.

    00;08;31;27 - 00;08;34;00

    Queso with them and everything.

    00;08;34;00 - 00;08;35;27

So last night we're like, oh, we're gonna.

    00;08;35;27 - 00;08;37;03

    It was like 1030.

    00;08;37;03 - 00;08;39;20

We just finished working on the basement

    of our coffee shop.

    00;08;39;20 - 00;08;42;19

    Taquitos. At 1030, there's a death and.

    00;08;42;19 - 00;08;44;13

Oh, we drink. Coffee at like five.

    00;08;45;13 - 00;08;46;25

    And, coffee.

    00;08;46;25 - 00;08;49;25

    It just boiling.

    00;08;49;26 - 00;08;50;14

    Well, we had.

    00;08;50;14 - 00;08;52;26

We had a lot we had to work with,

    like, insulation all night.

    00;08;52;26 - 00;08;56;02

So it was like we had to drink coffee

    to get through the evening.

    00;08;56;03 - 00;08;59;02

Do you have Tums for dessert?

    00;08;59;08 - 00;09;01;01

No. You get me a smoothie.

    00;09;01;01 - 00;09;02;24

    Kind. So.

    00;09;02;24 - 00;09;06;21

So we're like, oh, bus other taquitos,

    and I get like six,

    00;09;06;21 - 00;09;10;15

and I'm like, oh, I don't feel good.

    00;09;10;15 - 00;09;12;25

    I'm like, break it out.

The sweat sitting in the air conditioning.

    00;09;12;25 - 00;09;15;06

    I don't wow, I need a shower.

    00;09;15;06 - 00;09;17;06

    Oh, God.

    00;09;17;06 - 00;09;20;06

Oh. How do you still feel better.

    00;09;20;07 - 00;09;23;07

So I'm not saying those are connected

    to our topic today,

    00;09;23;07 - 00;09;26;22

but our topic today is SB 25.

    00;09;26;22 - 00;09;28;00

What does that mean to you guys?

    00;09;28;00 - 00;09;29;02

    Senate Bill 20.

    00;09;29;02 - 00;09;29;13

    Five.

    00;09;29;13 - 00;09;32;16

    Senate Bill

25 of what state can already knows Riley.

    00;09;33;04 - 00;09;34;12

    Texas. Texas.

    00;09;34;12 - 00;09;36;08

    I heard you guys

talking about it. I did it,

    00;09;37;08 - 00;09;38;21

So I could have played along.

    00;09;38;21 - 00;09;40;13

    It'd be like.

    00;09;40;13 - 00;09;44;00

SB 25 has two major categories to it.

    00;09;44;00 - 00;09;47;00

One can actually put me on to this,

    he said.

    00;09;47;07 - 00;09;49;17

    I saw this Instagram post.

    00;09;49;17 - 00;09;51;12

    But please, please, please.

    00;09;51;12 - 00;09;52;15

    Make. Sure it's real.

    00;09;52;15 - 00;09;58;01

So I came with a bunch of sources

and it is in fact real for the most part.

    00;09;58;04 - 00;09;59;01

    The post said.

    00;09;59;01 - 00;10;01;20

    Like Texas is banning

these species are there or the.

    00;10;01;20 - 00;10;04;13

    Species and we're tired.

    00;10;04;13 - 00;10;07;06

    These ingredients

or they gotta put a warning label.

    00;10;07;06 - 00;10;08;23

    It's not real.

    00;10;08;23 - 00;10;10;14

    There really isn't.

    Talk about banning them.

    00;10;10;14 - 00;10;14;19

It's just the warning label piece

and the warning is going to say warning.

    00;10;14;19 - 00;10;17;09

    This product contains an ingredient

    that is not recommended

    00;10;17;09 - 00;10;20;04

    for human consumption

    by the appropriate authority.

    00;10;20;04 - 00;10;24;13

    In Australia, Canada,

the European Union and the United Kingdom.

    00;10;24;21 - 00;10;25;17

    But go Texas.

    00;10;25;17 - 00;10;27;29

    Legislature SB 20.

    00;10;27;29 - 00;10;29;16

    Five. Wow.

    00;10;29;16 - 00;10;30;07

    That is what.

    00;10;30;07 - 00;10;32;19

    So that's what

they'll these companies want to put on.

    00;10;32;19 - 00;10;37;19

And just like Kent was saying,

the big talk is so this is happening 2027.

    00;10;37;19 - 00;10;40;12

It goes into effect January 1st.

    00;10;40;12 - 00;10;41;19

    And if

    00;10;42;20 - 00;10;43;10

    Texas is a

    00;10;43;10 - 00;10;47;11

    huge market for these companies,

    I mean, Austin, Houston,

    00;10;47;11 - 00;10;50;26

    Dallas, Fort Worth,

what's the other one in far?

    00;10;52;09 - 00;10;55;03

    Largely Hispanic, El Paso, El.

    00;10;55;03 - 00;10;56;26

    Paso. Yeah, San Antonio.

    00;10;56;26 - 00;10;58;14

    San Antonio. I mean.

    00;10;58;14 - 00;10;59;25

    I think it's Corpus Christi.

    00;10;59;25 - 00;11;02;27

    Christi big,

but a lot smaller than the other ones.

    00;11;03;01 - 00;11;05;07

    It's it's like a tourist destination,

    basically.

    00;11;05;07 - 00;11;07;15

There's so many huge cities in Texas.

    00;11;07;15 - 00;11;10;08

Or by to get some angry Texas comments.

    00;11;10;08 - 00;11;12;05

I think I've never been to Texas.

    00;11;12;05 - 00;11;17;02

    I think Texas and California

have like between them have like

    00;11;17;24 - 00;11;21;16

10 or 11 of the biggest 15 cities

    in the United States.

    00;11;21;17 - 00;11;23;02

    Yeah, yeah.

    00;11;23;02 - 00;11;24;29

I mean, it's huge population base.

    00;11;24;29 - 00;11;28;18

So these companies like, I don't know,

let's say talkies was one of them.

    00;11;28;18 - 00;11;32;13

    I don't know what companies

have these specific ingredients in them,

    00;11;32;27 - 00;11;33;16

    in their product.

    00;11;33;16 - 00;11;35;16

    Let's be careful there.

    We don't know that talkies.

    00;11;35;16 - 00;11;37;11

    We don't know that talkies.

    00;11;37;11 - 00;11;39;07

The legal team is a draft.

    00;11;39;07 - 00;11;40;21

    Or taquitos.

    00;11;40;21 - 00;11;41;09

    Do the same.

    00;11;41;09 - 00;11;45;01

    They all say,

    let's say, Nicholas Leary goes,

    00;11;46;05 - 00;11;48;15

    home batch pizza rolls.

    00;11;48;15 - 00;11;49;09

    Let's go there.

    00;11;49;09 - 00;11;50;00

    Okay, okay.

    00;11;50;00 - 00;11;55;00

    So how will this frito-lay's,

that one was actually cited as being one.

    00;11;55;04 - 00;11;56;15

    Okay. Okay. That works.

    00;11;56;15 - 00;12;02;16

    So Frito-lay's do they make

a totally separate packaging for Texas?

    00;12;02;16 - 00;12;04;17

I mean, the infrastructure to do

    that seems simple.

    00;12;04;17 - 00;12;07;04

    But when you're doing millions

and millions and millions of them,

    00;12;07;04 - 00;12;10;18

or do they put this warning label

on all of them that they're

    00;12;10;18 - 00;12;14;29

putting out in the United States,

which, from my own personal opinion,

    00;12;14;29 - 00;12;18;07

    would be awesome

if all like those warning labels.

    00;12;18;22 - 00;12;22;13

    What people don't realize is

when like a company like Google,

    00;12;22;23 - 00;12;26;18

they'll switch like one tiny thing

on their website and it'll make a huge

    00;12;26;18 - 00;12;30;14

    difference, worth millions of dollars

    or influencing millions of people.

    00;12;30;18 - 00;12;33;11

    And it'll be like something

    that's like ten pixels different,

    00;12;33;11 - 00;12;34;20

    because the psychology.

    00;12;34;20 - 00;12;37;16

So if there are warning labels on it,

    I could imagine

    00;12;37;16 - 00;12;40;27

    millions

less of these products being being bought.

    00;12;41;02 - 00;12;42;28

I don't care that these companies

    are selling them.

    00;12;42;28 - 00;12;46;15

I'm more interested that we as humans

aren't buying them and consuming them.

    00;12;46;22 - 00;12;48;13

I know that sounds kind of lopsided, but.

    00;12;48;13 - 00;12;50;02

    Well, do you think?

    00;12;50;02 - 00;12;50;09

    Yeah.

    00;12;50;09 - 00;12;52;27

    I mean, right now

    people are already eating them.

    00;12;52;27 - 00;12;53;13

    Oh, yeah.

    00;12;53;13 - 00;12;57;15

You think that'll change human behavior if

that label does end up on the packaging?

    00;12;59;27 - 00;13;00;20

    Yeah.

    00;13;00;20 - 00;13;01;24

    You think it will not?

    00;13;01;24 - 00;13;05;01

Not 100%, but I could see like 20%. Sure.

    00;13;05;03 - 00;13;08;16

Or it could send people on to like,

    okay, this warning sign.

    00;13;08;16 - 00;13;09;07

    Like what?

    00;13;09;07 - 00;13;10;01

    What else?

    00;13;10;01 - 00;13;13;16

You know, it could send them on

a, on a journey of, of health.

    00;13;13;16 - 00;13;16;23

And I could see that happening

for more than a few people.

    00;13;16;23 - 00;13;19;00

    The way I interpreted this.

    00;13;19;00 - 00;13;22;02

    So it's interesting

you're going the path way that you have.

    00;13;22;03 - 00;13;25;03

    You're, you're it sounds like you're

    working under the assumption that

    00;13;26;08 - 00;13;29;03

these companies will just shrug and say,

all right, let's put the warning

    00;13;29;03 - 00;13;30;12

    label on there.

    00;13;30;12 - 00;13;33;24

I kind of took it as these companies,

    but we can't put a,

    00;13;34;05 - 00;13;38;07

you know, not fit for human consumption

    warning level on our food.

    00;13;38;15 - 00;13;40;13

Yeah. You know, that'll kill us.

    00;13;40;13 - 00;13;43;03

    So I kind of took

it as it could lead to these,

    00;13;45;08 - 00;13;47;22

    food processors changing their recipes.

    00;13;47;22 - 00;13;48;11

    Maybe.

    00;13;48;11 - 00;13;51;11

    But I think you,

    you greatly underestimate.

    00;13;51;11 - 00;13;54;11

    Well, but that's already

that's already happened in our lifetime.

    00;13;55;05 - 00;13;58;04

    It happened with, trans fats.

    00;13;58;29 - 00;13;59;27

    Yeah.

    00;13;59;27 - 00;14;02;00

You know, all sorts of stuff.

    Used to have trans fats.

    00;14;02;00 - 00;14;06;07

And as a child of the 90s, and maybe

when I was old enough, I can tell you

    00;14;06;07 - 00;14;09;20

right now that a Little Debbie right now

    ain't nothing compared to.

    00;14;09;20 - 00;14;12;05

    What, a little, in 19. 94.

    00;14;12;05 - 00;14;13;14

Those are the good old days.

    00;14;13;14 - 00;14;15;12

    What is a trans fat?

    00;14;15;12 - 00;14;16;07

    It's just a made.

    00;14;16;07 - 00;14;19;07

    It's just, manufactured, fat.

    00;14;20;06 - 00;14;20;14

    Okay.

    00;14;20;14 - 00;14;23;29

So it doesn't occur in nature

    that affected flavor in.

    00;14;24;11 - 00;14;25;25

    At least that's

    how I've understood it. So.

    00;14;25;25 - 00;14;28;00

So what's up with the whole thing of like.

    00;14;28;00 - 00;14;30;25

    Yeah, the big companies paid

to blame everything on trans fat

    00;14;30;25 - 00;14;33;16

    and not instead of sugar,

because sugar is the real goal.

    00;14;33;16 - 00;14;35;22

Well, they don't say trans fat,

    they just say fat.

    00;14;35;22 - 00;14;40;25

    So remember like, you know,

this is fat free or whatever labeling.

    00;14;40;25 - 00;14;42;15

Yeah, that was probably. A year ago.

    00;14;42;15 - 00;14;44;17

    I was really little.

But I do remember it. Yeah.

    00;14;44;17 - 00;14;46;09

    So that was that was

    00;14;47;08 - 00;14;48;03

    in response to that.

    00;14;48;03 - 00;14;49;27

Like, oh man, I don't want to be fat.

    00;14;49;27 - 00;14;54;01

And that says this, this food has a lot of

fat in it, you know, like that.

    00;14;54;08 - 00;14;57;08

But that's not a direct correlation. Yeah.

    00;14;57;19 - 00;15;00;11

So Riley, you have any thoughts before.

    00;15;00;11 - 00;15;03;20

    Well, I would just

I would say that my guess is

    00;15;03;20 - 00;15;07;00

    they're they're going to change

    ingredients.

    00;15;07;18 - 00;15;12;16

In the long term I don't see any you know,

    everyone talks about brand now,

    00;15;13;02 - 00;15;16;21

you know, do you want to be the company

    that sells food and says,

    00;15;16;21 - 00;15;18;06

this is not food on the front?

    00;15;18;06 - 00;15;20;06

You know, I'll just makes me feel like.

    00;15;20;06 - 00;15;22;01

Handling like chemicals, you know? Yeah.

    00;15;22;01 - 00;15;25;09

    Like when you're handling,

like, let's say, herbicide or something,

    00;15;25;09 - 00;15;29;00

    you'll see a warning label

on there of some kind that tells you,

    00;15;29;07 - 00;15;32;07

    hey, don't drink this

or don't get this in your eyes.

    00;15;32;08 - 00;15;36;02

I mean, you're now taking food

and almost putting it in the same.

    00;15;36;02 - 00;15;38;16

    Yeah, it's

no longer in the category of food.

    00;15;38;16 - 00;15;40;04

    It's almost in like this.

    00;15;40;04 - 00;15;43;04

    Yeah. Weird consumption category.

    00;15;43;04 - 00;15;43;24

    I agree. With you.

    00;15;43;24 - 00;15;47;06

Well, I think that that it will lead to,

    00;15;48;21 - 00;15;50;04

    And I'm very.

    00;15;50;04 - 00;15;54;13

Maybe I'm just too optimistic here, but

I think it will lead to a change in, So.

    00;15;54;13 - 00;15;57;08

So I guess you're probably right.

    00;15;57;08 - 00;16;00;08

    I'm thinking, like, first

the warning labels will show up,

    00;16;00;08 - 00;16;03;16

then you will start to care about it,

    then they'll change that.

    00;16;03;16 - 00;16;06;16

Yeah. My guess on on how it all.

    00;16;06;22 - 00;16;09;04

    But, so, could happen.

    00;16;09;04 - 00;16;09;24

    Yeah.

    00;16;09;24 - 00;16;13;01

I also think more than we think it does

    00;16;13;01 - 00;16;16;01

    right now,

this has giant ramifications for farmers.

    00;16;17;02 - 00;16;19;03

    If any time

    00;16;19;03 - 00;16;22;03

you make a major change in the food

    supply,

    00;16;23;18 - 00;16;28;07

farmers will be impacted for either

    good or bad, you know?

    00;16;28;07 - 00;16;31;08

And I could see this causing a big push in

    00;16;31;08 - 00;16;34;08

    and more healthy and,

    00;16;34;15 - 00;16;38;06

    organic and certified,

    naturally grown, like Jill Bibeau

    00;16;38;06 - 00;16;41;25

    and some of those farmers

    I, they couldn't handle.

    00;16;42;04 - 00;16;43;11

    Not in an insulting way.

    00;16;43;11 - 00;16;46;14

But like, if there was immediately

a 40% increase in their stuff

    00;16;46;14 - 00;16;49;03

    being bought,

like they're just went, right. Yeah.

    00;16;49;03 - 00;16;50;26

    You know, and so,

    00;16;50;26 - 00;16;52;10

    I could see that

    being a really good thing,

    00;16;52;10 - 00;16;54;26

    maybe even people ripping out

corn and beans because they found out,

    00;16;54;26 - 00;16;57;29

oh, I can make a lot of money

    selling broccoli and tomatoes.

    00;16;58;07 - 00;17;00;19

    Yeah. No,

I think that would be really cool.

    00;17;00;19 - 00;17;04;27

    Just just the like

it may seem a tiny difference,

    00;17;04;27 - 00;17;08;12

    but like, on the whole,

    on the whole supply chain,

    00;17;08;29 - 00;17;11;23

    I'm excited

for some of the big ones that they have

    00;17;11;23 - 00;17;15;10

    that are requiring is red

40 is, the most popular one.

    00;17;15;10 - 00;17;18;08

But then like for which is a preservative.

    00;17;18;08 - 00;17;22;01

    And, they said agents

    like titanium dioxide.

    00;17;22;01 - 00;17;24;29

    And I thought about

I should look into what agents are.

    00;17;24;29 - 00;17;26;15

    And then I didn't.

    00;17;26;15 - 00;17;29;03

    Did the the paper,

    the paper is multiplied.

    00;17;29;03 - 00;17;29;29

    Yeah, yeah.

    00;17;29;29 - 00;17;32;12

So, you guys have any idea what that is?

    00;17;32;12 - 00;17;34;07

I think it's just an active chemical.

    00;17;34;07 - 00;17;35;13

    So it's something that.

    00;17;35;13 - 00;17;37;01

    It's a chemical that's been added

    00;17;37;01 - 00;17;41;01

    to create a certain effect

    within the overall compound.

    00;17;41;01 - 00;17;45;03

Either coloring or some sort of preserve

    preserving action, maybe.

    00;17;45;08 - 00;17;46;14

    Yeah.

    00;17;46;14 - 00;17;48;07

I think this is good news.

    00;17;48;07 - 00;17;52;23

    And I'm like our, our,

    our resident libertarian.

    00;17;52;23 - 00;17;55;23

Leave me alone. Don't make rules. But,

    00;17;56;27 - 00;17;59;01

    you know, it's it's like a

    00;17;59;01 - 00;18;03;11

I compare a lot of things to companies,

but it's like a company who rips off

    00;18;03;11 - 00;18;06;11

    its first few customers

to make a few more dollars and then,

    00;18;07;13 - 00;18;09;14

    but then its reputation

    is absolutely crap,

    00;18;09;14 - 00;18;12;04

and so it falls to the wayside.

    It can't last.

    00;18;12;04 - 00;18;15;22

    That's basically

    what feeding your own population,

    00;18;15;22 - 00;18;19;20

your own market, like the people

who buy your stuff over and over again.

    00;18;19;26 - 00;18;21;12

That's what feeding them garbage is.

    00;18;21;12 - 00;18;25;17

Yeah, it's not going to make a difference

this quarter or maybe even this year.

    00;18;25;22 - 00;18;28;23

In fact, it might even increase stuff

because of addiction and things like that.

    00;18;29;00 - 00;18;30;21

But there's going to be a push back.

    00;18;30;21 - 00;18;32;07

And I think this is the push back.

    00;18;32;07 - 00;18;35;19

And now all these companies aren't

set up for the healthier products, right?

    00;18;35;19 - 00;18;36;29

The healthier products that are coming.

    00;18;36;29 - 00;18;40;17

And that's why there's these giant brands

    being made like Clif Bar,

    00;18;40;18 - 00;18;44;05

which is basically a candy bar, but

a little healthier, you know what I mean?

    00;18;44;05 - 00;18;46;15

So just those incremental healthy things.

    00;18;46;15 - 00;18;49;09

But there's a second big piece

    of this bill

    00;18;49;09 - 00;18;51;24

    and it's, it's education.

    00;18;51;24 - 00;18;57;05

    So physical, 30 minutes

of physical activity a day for schools,

    00;18;57;05 - 00;19;01;15

not like 90 minutes every 2 or 3 days,

at least 30 minutes a day.

    00;19;01;21 - 00;19;06;24

    And then nurses are required

    to take nutrition classes and,

    00;19;07;19 - 00;19;11;26

or I believe all colleges have to offer

    nutrition classes.

    00;19;12;13 - 00;19;16;01

I think was the, the other big one,

but it was like, oh, and high schools

    00;19;16;01 - 00;19;19;26

have to offer like a nutrition

    like a health science class,

    00;19;19;26 - 00;19;25;05

    but specifically for nutrition and,

I think that's awesome like that,

    00;19;25;06 - 00;19;29;02

    to get that

into the general, intelligence to have.

    00;19;29;08 - 00;19;31;15

    Yeah, yeah.

I think a lot of times when you look at,

    00;19;33;18 - 00;19;35;03

    yourself or

    00;19;35;03 - 00;19;38;28

    others who, are unhealthy,

    right, physically and healthy,

    00;19;39;11 - 00;19;45;05

you think it's like a willful, negligence

or or just even a choice.

    00;19;45;05 - 00;19;45;15

    Yeah.

    00;19;45;15 - 00;19;46;17

    I'm just gonna I'm

    00;19;46;17 - 00;19;49;17

going to eat poorly on purpose,

because that's what I like doing.

    00;19;49;26 - 00;19;51;19

    And there's I'm sure

    that is somehow the case,

    00;19;51;19 - 00;19;54;09

but I think a lot of it is just

    people don't know.

    00;19;54;09 - 00;19;59;11

    They don't they don't know

what good food is because it's so hard

    00;19;59;11 - 00;20;04;03

to come by anymore, and it's so easy

to come by stuff that's not good for you.

    00;20;04;09 - 00;20;07;14

And, a lot of times the stuff

that's not good for you is cheaper.

    00;20;07;24 - 00;20;11;06

A lot of times a day is a little better,

    you know, because you're hitting,

    00;20;11;06 - 00;20;15;11

I mean, up front in some terrible film

on the roof of your mouth afterwards.

    00;20;16;05 - 00;20;17;18

    Not so much, but but,

    00;20;18;22 - 00;20;20;16

    There's there's a lot to it

    00;20;20;16 - 00;20;25;06

    that I think is beyond

    just people making poor choices.

    00;20;25;06 - 00;20;30;06

I think they need to be reeducated on to

this is what I need to have in my diet.

    00;20;30;06 - 00;20;32;03

    And this is

what would make me feel better.

    00;20;32;03 - 00;20;35;01

    And this is

what would make me live longer.

    00;20;35;01 - 00;20;38;01

Yeah, able to do more things

than I really care to do

    00;20;38;14 - 00;20;42;06

    instead of,

just saying, oh, this is what you know,

    00;20;42;25 - 00;20;45;25

we get all of our suppers

from the frozen food aisle, you know.

    00;20;46;14 - 00;20;46;25

    Yeah.

    00;20;46;25 - 00;20;49;27

Well, I mean, we're in the midst of,

    food revolution.

    00;20;49;27 - 00;20;52;07

You look at the 70s and 80s,

    it was all about value.

    00;20;52;07 - 00;20;55;07

    How much can I get

    for how little you know.

    00;20;55;11 - 00;20;56;20

    And then that changed.

    00;20;56;20 - 00;21;00;22

You know, now we're talking about Whole

Foods and we're talking about, you know,

    00;21;01;24 - 00;21;03;06

    how much can we save

    00;21;03;06 - 00;21;06;11

in medical bills by eating real food

    instead of just

    00;21;07;00 - 00;21;09;26

something that shoots out of a factory

    tube somewhere?

    00;21;09;26 - 00;21;10;04

    Yeah.

    00;21;10;04 - 00;21;14;01

You know, you know, it's so much of

    it was just like invention.

    00;21;14;11 - 00;21;15;07

    Yeah. No.

    00;21;15;07 - 00;21;17;11

    Oh, look,

you know, there's this TV dinners.

    00;21;17;11 - 00;21;19;24

Did you see what they came out

    with? Oh, yeah.

    00;21;19;24 - 00;21;21;14

You see what hostess just came out with?

    00;21;21;14 - 00;21;23;01

They used to just have, zingers.

    00;21;23;01 - 00;21;26;18

    Now they got, you

know, Ding Dongs or whatever, you know.

    00;21;26;22 - 00;21;31;09

Well, and and it was just like

it was in the celebratory way of.

    00;21;31;09 - 00;21;33;28

Look, I wonder what they're going

    to come up with next.

    00;21;33;28 - 00;21;34;07

    Yeah.

    00;21;34;07 - 00;21;37;08

And now and then also on top of that,

    00;21;37;13 - 00;21;41;12

    compounding with that is,

oh, man, I, you know, I have no energy.

    00;21;41;12 - 00;21;44;12

I, I, you know, I feel blah all the time.

    00;21;44;21 - 00;21;49;01

Well they got this new medication

you know, so we constantly rolling down.

    00;21;49;03 - 00;21;49;09

    Yeah.

    00;21;49;09 - 00;21;54;08

We're like but looking towards this

new invented thing to make it all better.

    00;21;54;19 - 00;21;56;10

    But in reality the,

    00;21;56;10 - 00;21;59;27

the things that we need to feel better

were invented when the world was created.

    00;22;00;02 - 00;22;02;04

    Yeah, yeah, yeah.

    00;22;02;04 - 00;22;03;18

And if you want. Any proof.

    00;22;03;18 - 00;22;07;04

Listen, in the last weeks, episode

    with Kelly Fincher.

    00;22;07;07 - 00;22;10;01

    Yeah, we got one episode.

    Totally incredible.

    00;22;10;01 - 00;22;10;08

    Yeah.

    00;22;10;08 - 00;22;12;00

When I was, we were sitting with Kelly,

    00;22;12;00 - 00;22;15;00

    I was thinking to myself,

this is a guy who's going to.

    00;22;15;12 - 00;22;18;00

I don't want to jinx anything here,

    but he's going to live

    00;22;18;00 - 00;22;21;01

    a very long time

and be very active for a very long time.

    00;22;21;01 - 00;22;24;07

Oh, yeah, because you could tell

    he was, like, older,

    00;22;24;12 - 00;22;25;27

but he was like filled with energy.

    00;22;25;27 - 00;22;28;03

He was like shaking the whole time.

    00;22;28;03 - 00;22;31;02

Yeah I bet, I bet you Kelly could just

get up and run a couple of miles.

    00;22;31;13 - 00;22;33;15

    I don't know if he's a runner or not,

but just like looking at him

    00;22;33;15 - 00;22;36;08

he's just like he's very very weak,

    very good health.

    00;22;36;08 - 00;22;38;08

    Crawling

crawling out of the truck with my quick

    00;22;38;08 - 00;22;41;26

    trip coffee,

I felt much more lethargic than he is.

    00;22;42;10 - 00;22;43;11

    Yeah.

    00;22;43;11 - 00;22;47;01

    He can, went home

    and in his, dream journal,

    00;22;47;01 - 00;22;49;08

crossed out all of his dreams and goals

    and just wrote.

    00;22;49;08 - 00;22;50;18

    Kelly, can you tell me?

    00;22;50;18 - 00;22;51;21

    Yeah. This is God.

    00;22;51;21 - 00;22;53;16

This is supposed to be. Kelly gets it.

    00;22;53;16 - 00;22;54;09

    Oh, man.

    00;22;54;09 - 00;22;56;23

Well, I think this is a step

    in the right direction.

    00;22;56;23 - 00;22;58;24

I think it would be cool

    if Iowa did something.

    00;22;58;24 - 00;23;00;23

    Something that Iowa is doing.

    00;23;00;23 - 00;23;03;14

    Our good friend, Beth Hoffman,

she didn't ask me to share this.

    00;23;03;14 - 00;23;04;21

    She's running a podcast.

    00;23;04;21 - 00;23;06;28

I believe it's with the Iowa Food

    Coalition.

    00;23;06;28 - 00;23;10;16

    Really great 15 minute episodes,

    very well informed.

    00;23;10;16 - 00;23;12;09

    It's very journalistic.

    00;23;12;09 - 00;23;13;22

    So it's not interview style.

    00;23;13;22 - 00;23;15;17

    It's a lot of information.

    00;23;15;17 - 00;23;18;17

    Very quickly,

she does a good job of fleshing out,

    00;23;18;18 - 00;23;21;18

    fleshing it out

and actually getting to the root of,

    00;23;21;23 - 00;23;26;06

so far what I've let's do is a lot of food

and politics and how they go together.

    00;23;26;06 - 00;23;30;18

But like Kelly said, like our agriculture

is driven by policy at this point.

    00;23;30;25 - 00;23;32;09

And so I'd love to separate it.

    00;23;32;09 - 00;23;36;24

But the only way you get a separate

    your food consumption from policy

    00;23;36;24 - 00;23;38;17

is by having a really good garden,

    00;23;38;17 - 00;23;41;13

being part of a really good food hub

    or something of the like.

    00;23;41;13 - 00;23;45;27

So we really appreciate you guys

and we will talk to you again next time.
